And now for something completely different–A Bikeable Feast hosted by ArtsRiot in Burlington. After assembling with a group of strangers at ArtsRiot on Pine Street this afternoon, we tooled around the cities of Burlington and Winooski, paying visits to various folks in the local food chain. Each of our hosts met us later for a feast at ArtsRiot.
Our first stop was at Scout & Co. For the feast, they provided two flavors of ice cream (chocolate hay and sweet pea) and coffee. Our second stop was at Digger’s Mirth Collective Farm in the Intervale. Digger’s Mirth provided mesclun, cucumber and tomato for the feast salad and root vegetables to become frites. Our third stop was the Guild Commissary, provider of hanger steak and chicken thighs for the feast. Our fourth stop was Barrio Bakery who provided foccacia, table bread and tarts for the feast. Our final stop was the newly opened Queen City Brewery for a tasting of City Beer Kölsch, Munich Dunkel, Saint Amandus Belgian Amber and Landlady ESB. Finally, we returned to ArtsRiot to enjoy our local feast along with a pint of City Beer Kölsch.
Today’s forecast called for stormy conditions. We dodged the rain for most of the tour. Just as we were about to leave Barrio Bakery, the bottom fell out. We waited for the heaviest rain to pass and then set out for Queen City Brewery in a light rain. By the time we arrived at the brewery, it was pouring again. And then, while we were in the brewery, it starting pouring even harder. I was glad to be inside for a spell rather than cycling through the “carwash”. Apparently the rainfall created more run-off than the city could handle. For our last leg from the brewery to ArtsRiot, Pine Street was flooded with raw sewage gushing out of manholes. Nice.
A leisurely 12.7-mile spin followed by a festive meal…and a fun way to meet some of the fine folks who help put food on our plates.
